Like
bees, the crowd swarmed around to the platform. A frantic youngster quickly
revising for exam, a mother running late for office, a man well in to his fifties
still slaving away for his family, a bunch of college-goers, gay and frolicking,
a bunch of vendors, a teacher, an IT professional, a maid, an officer…. All
flocked like the birds and awaited the distant train.
The train
came with a loud horn and the madness began like a spell bespoken. People
scrambled to get inside the compartments and it was indeed a survival of the
fittest. Missing the train would make or break few people’s lives and alter the
course of life as they know it. Lost in the madness, none paused to help the
needy.
As I watched
in amazement at the almost barbaric scene, I noticed an old handicapped man who
got in to the First Class compartment. His clothes were disheveled and his eyes
had the look of man who had seen much in life and silently conquered them all. He
must have been a man of dignity in the past and the years had taken their toll
on him.
After
some time, the air became slightly tensed. The ticket checker had boarded. The
herd grew tense and once again the mad scrambling began. Some dug their pockets,
others reached deep in to their overstuffed bags, purses, etc. The ticket
checker approached the old man and asked him for his ticket. And when the old
man showed him his ticket a satanic sly gleam came into the eyes of the ticket
checker. His expression turned scornful and like a cat, he pounced on his prey,
his tone became disparaging and started belting out curses. The old man had boarded the wrong compartment apparently.
The ticket checker did not stop with expletives and resorted to shameful shoving.
The old man tried to maintain his poise and said that back in the old days, he
had been a police officer. The ticket
checker’s only response was that the old man was no longer in service.
People
looked on at this scene with undeterred attention and yet none had the courage
to stand up for the old man. Such is the scenario of today’s cruelly
indifferent world.
What goes
around certainly comes around. Many a times, when we hurt somebody, we forget
that we are attracting negative vibes and these negative vibes cause mishaps to
us and the ones around us. I delved deeper into various scriptures and
this was what I found.
Hosea 8:7 - .For they
have sown the wind, and they shall reap the whirlwind: it hath no stalk: the
bud shall yield no meal: if so be it yield, the strangers shall swallow it up
"The
word karma literally means
"activity." Karma can
be divided up into a few simple categories -- good, bad, individual and
collective. Depending on one's actions, one will reap the fruits of those
actions. The fruits may be sweet or sour, depending on the nature of the
actions performed. Fruits can also be reaped in a collective manner if a group
of people together perform a certain activity or activities."
Yet people continue to
hurt others, plot others’ downfall with careful cunningness and revel in others’
misfortunes. Such people are to be pitied and if we are smart, we ought to
learn from them.
